My 2 year old son, Jude, was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis (NF1) on Christmas Eve, 2015, shortly after his second birthday. Jude’s condition causes tumors to grow on his optic nerves behind his eyes. Due to the progression of one of his NF1 tumors, Jude began chemotherapy treatments at Dayton Children’s Hospital in Dayton, Ohio in August 2016.
Our family was scared about Jude’s Journey when he had surgery to install a “Chemo Port” in his heart shortly before starting chemotherapy. Our fears were quickly calmed, however; during Jude’s “Chemo Port” surgery, I went to the Chapel at the hospital, knelt down and prayed to God, asking Him to speak to me about Jude’s Journey. In response, God immediately directed me to the most-powerful Scripture I have ever read: Isaiah 38:9-20, which brought our family instant peace and comfort by reminding us that we should “Keep The Faith”, and that God is in Control.
At the time of this writing, Jude has undergone 10 of 60 chemotherapy treatments. He is doing remarkably well with the chemotherapy so far; praise the Lord.
During Jude’s first few chemotherapy treatments, I was inspired to write this song by the brave children who dress up like their favorite superheroes while they fight childhood illness and cancer. These courageous kids find inspiration and comfort from superheroes, not realizing that they are the REAL superheroes. May God bless all of the superheroes fighting the fight of their lives.
